Over the holiday break I enjoyed the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City. Their current exhibit, NATIONAL DESIGN TRIENNIAL: WHY DESIGN NOW?, showcasing innovations in many areas of practice including architecture, fashion and new media recurring since 2000.
My favorite innovation was of course health related, and in the vein of my artistic creations, also kinesthetic and recycled! Project H Design displayed their “Learning Landscape”– a scalable, grid-based playground system for elementary math education. Using reclaimed tires inscribed with chalk numbers, teachers challenge students to move and compete to solve answers to math questions. They grid also encourages students to create their own games. With so much school time devoted to core subjects, I am inspired by innovators like Project H to continue working toward solutions to both mental and physical education that keep learning fresh.
