Hope you enjoyed a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday break. I spent the time logged off from technology without any distractions, assignments or projects to reflect on a wild year and re-stratagize for an equally fulfilling 2011.

To celebrate this occasion, I created a “wish on a snowflake for 2011″ board in our office so friends and co-workers could try to re-create their third grade scissor handiwork to make their wish offiical for all to see. I was struck by the number of resolutions to spend more time with friends and family, do that thing we’ve been promising to do for ourselves, and (overwhelmingly) to take more time to enjoy the moment.

It made me wonder, why do we miss reflecting and taking care of ourselves for the rest of the year?

Happy Thanksgiving!
As an official Turkey Baby, my family and I celebrate the holiday and my birth by serving as balloon handlers in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year, we were on the little known “Yes, Virginia” (“There is a Santa Claus!”) the official Macy’s float positioned right in front of Santa Claus. Though we get very little TV time, we enjoy the parade from with a front row view down Central Park West, Columbus Circle, Times Square, and Herald Square. The 2.5 mile walk is not easy, as the 20 balloon handlers use only their body weight to keep the balloon near the ground. It was a windless day so we were more able than most years to gawk at the sights, sounds, and smells of the city.

It’s one of the largest advertising events of the year— with larger than life versions of Ronald McDonald, The Pillsbury Dough Boy, and the Energizer Bunny bouncing to the lip syncing of the latest pop single– aired between commercial breaks.

We returned home to mashed mashed everything, salad, green beans, brussel sprouts, corn bread, and turkey that had been roasting all day. It was a dietitians feast!
I still have 3 healthy kittens available for adoption. Let me know if you are interested. My house is becoming very small!
Let the holiday season begin!

In addition to his roles as Communications Manager, Lead Guitarist and Brother here at Note to Health, Mark Jayne also serves as our resident Bass. Although Mark has a wonderful voice, he is always forced (by his sister) to sing ridiculously for comic relief.

The preschool healthy habits CD, based on our show Jill & Jam, will be titled Goin’ on a Journey: Songs for Every Body. You can get your copy in November of 2010!

After orchestrating a hefty production schedule, I hit the vocal booth for lead vocals and harmony. More than anything else on the record, the vocals have to be perfect. Singing the same part over and over can make even the sanest of us crazy. It goes with the territory, however, for conceiving these songs makes me either brilliant or insane.

The Ann Liguori Foundation, named for the Founder and President of the Foundation, sports talk show host and reporter, Ann Liguori, brought registered dietitan/musician Jill Jayne and her rock ‘n roll nutrition show “I Will Not Be Bought” to three Middle Schools in the Hamptons this week. Jayne performed for the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders in two sessions each, at the Southampton Intermediate School, Springs Public School and the Pierson Middle School in Sag Harbor, NY.

Jill’s music-based performance “I Will Not Be Bought” focuses on the influence of advertising on body image, nutrition, substance abuse and peer pressure. Her messages to respect your body, drink more water, get enough calcium, examine food packages more closely, and eat less junk food all encourage critical consumption.

The Ann Liguori Foundation is a 501c3 public charity whose mission is to raise funds and awareness for organizations who work in the field of cancer prevention, research and cancer care-related charities, specifically directed to help people on the East End of Long Island. “Educating young people about making healthy eating choices and the importance of exercise is so important in preventing many diseases and for over-all good health,” says Liguori. “Jill brings so much excitement and enthusiasm to these shows and the students are energized and educated about eating healthy and the importance of exercising. It’s such an important message!”

Liguori adds: “Teachers have come up to me and said it is the best assembly they’ve ever seen and the kids really connect with Jill. The Ann Liguori Foundation is proud to make this possible.”

Liguori, a Westhampton resident, would like to continue to bring the nutritional education concert to more schools on the East End.

Tim Frazier, Principal at Southampton Intermediate School says, “Jill did a fantastic job not only as a celebrity, but as a professional educator. I wish I could hire her as a teacher. She really knows how to connect with teachers, students and parents.”

The Ann Liguori Foundation raises money via a charity golf tournament each year and a charity dinner dance every summer. Next year’s charity golf tournament is Tuesday, May 17 at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, NY. Last week I had the pleasure of performing with the Buffalo Bills as part of the National Dairy Council and National Football League to support their “Fuel Up to Play 60″ event. The “Fuel Up to Play 60″ campaign is an important one, incorporating both the nutrition AND physical activity aspects to their educational efforts. They rely on the celebrity status of the players and their connections throughout most major US cities to enhance their reach. The Dairy Council partnership makes sense when so many kids replace milk with soda and sweetened drinks without the calcium needed for strong teeth and bones.

Even at 5’10″, it is a humbling experience to stand next to a group of NFL players. One hundred kids from the Buffalo area joined us, along with about 25 of the Buffalo Bills roster who donated their only day off for the week. Antonio ColemanDominique Harris, Cardaro Howard, and the first Chinese-American to ever play in the NFL, Ed Wang joined me on stage. My inflatable instruments never looked so small! I used the players as physique specimens of the importance of fitness and asked them to share a little about their healthy food routines. I was as infatuated with the players as they were with me! Ed Wang filmed me for most of the show, apparently to show his friends that there really is a Rockstar Nutritionist.

Domique Harris laughs, Ed Wang films for his youtube channel, and Antonio Coleman gets down to the “Beat of the Body.”

New Jersey Kids and Families Get Ready for Back-to-School by Rocking

NEW YORK, AUGUST 28 —Just in time for the back-to-school season, the Parisi Speed School will sponsor the healthy eating rock concert for kids, Jump with Jill, at the Morris Plains, NJ location on Wednesday, September 1. The show is open to the public and starts rockin’ at 7 PM. Jump with Jill is an interactive show that teaches nutrition through music and dance. This innovative approach to childhood obesity prevention was developed by Jill Jayne, a registered dietitian (RD) and musician. This show supports an ongoing partnership between the Parisi Speed School and the production company for Jump with Jill, Note to Health.

“Good nutrition gives kids a competitive edge in the classroom and the sports field,” says Jayne. “Parisi recognizes the importance nutrition plays in the student athletes they train.”

“The Parisi Speed School is dedicated to offering only the best in the business to the student athletes we train and have found exactly that in Jill’s programs!” says Steve Leo, Director of Training at Parisi Speed School.
